Date: Sunday, April 8, 2012, 5:17 PMI was with with Mallam Idi at Ankpa this day.He has a two year and one month history of inability to walk following a road traffic accident along Jigawa - Kano road.He had barely started work with Zain Nigeria and was not on official duty when this happened. It was thought to be a spinal shock initially with anticipation of a resolution within weeks that has turned to years now. Here sits a man full of promise, educated and nostalgic about tomorrow then but all that is left now is the hope you can see in his eyes and the remnants of eloquence in communications. He was at the murtala mohammed hospital Kano the day following the accident in march 2010, there was no bed there and in Dalar orthopadic,he ended up in a private orthopedic hospital where he spent over 3 weeks. Preliminary radiographs did not reveal any injury of surgical importance. His doctors believed he needed support care and physiotherapy. This did not produce the desired results after he had spent his earnings. The homeward journey begun, then the search for solace in trado-medications not because he had no faith in orthodox remedy but the lean pocket. Months passed by with no improvement, then he picked courage to visit the national orthopedic hospital Enugu, complete assessment here was truncated by financial constraints. He was asked to continue physiotherapy at the federal medical centre , Lokoja. To go to Enugu cost him N16000 per trip and Lokoja N14000 because of his situation. This is the stall. Above all the medical opinion is scanty. My OpinionThis is a case of lower limb paralysis following road traffic accident with suspicion of neurological involvement. What does he need?A full assessment by a neurosurgeonWhere possible:Enugu( A specialized neurosurgical centre( private owned) or UNTH)National hospital Abuja ( I am not well informed about this facility capabilities)Any other one other forum members know.Surgeries or care/ assessments in this centers range from 750, 000 to 2, 500,000 depending on type or length of stay. The initial assessment may determine direction of care.May be the Igala project members should support Mall. Idi to first go and have a full Neurosurgial assessment in any of this centers with an initial donation of five hundred thousand naira (N500, 000.00.) There after the forum shall give further assistance.I am happy to have had this opportunity to be myself. Thank you all._____________________________Dr Akogu Simon P.
